Chair Color
How can I stain a chair a dark color?
Do I have to sand it or can I just kind of paint the stain on? We are going to buy 8 chairs, so the amount of work helps determine what ill pay for the color i want.

If you are buying unfinished wood chairs, I would recommend using a fine sand paper on them. Then get a good quality water base stain, the color you want. You said you wanted a dark color, but if you want the wood grain to show through, you can dilute the stain a bit with water. You can not do this with oil base stains and oil base stains are not water clean up. I would recommend you use all water base products stain, sealer and varnish. You will be much happier at clean up time. It is also safer to work with. Use a good sealer after the staining is done, then a couple coats of varnish with a light fine sanding between each coat. Water base stain is used on hardwood flooring too. It works well. I have used it on a whole kitchen full of cabinets and on bar stools and I couldn’t be happier with the result. I learned this from a vocational instructor who taught wood finishing. I applied all finishes with a brush.
