Child Play
What is a mad, creative idea for child play?
For preschool aged children who need to be playing socially and maths needs to be a part of the play.
This could be using any kind of object really but I like using natural, easily found objects in my activities.
Take the children for a walk around the yard and have them pay close attention to the leaves on the different trees / bushes. Talk about their shape and size. Collect samples of discussed leaves. If season permits (i.e. Autumn / Winter) they’ll be easily collected without damaging any plants.
Have the children sort the leaves from smallest to biggest, working together to get it all in the right order, and then paste them on to a long sheet of paper. Leave space between the leaves so that the children can continue to add to it over the next week or so if they find a special leaf at home. They could discuss as a group where on the paper the leaf belongs in regards to its size.
They could also be asked to look at the plants in their yard at home and bring in a leaf from one of them. Maybe finding out what the tree / bush / plant is called, does it grow flowers, seed pods, prickles, etc.
This activity could be step off to an entire topic on plants.
