Why am i seeing double at the optometrists office?
I have had myopia since I was 9, and always had glasses since then. Steadily the sight is getting bad and a few months ago i went to a uni optometry clinic to get a new script. They put those heavy frames on and I was seeing double vision which is very unusual for me.
I had a retinal detachment fixed in april last year, with a scleral buckle and gas bubble. I still get floaters and flashes, but Ive only ever had mild double vision when im tired..like everyone else.
With the current glasses I have on now, I see relatively ok, in that i cant see distance things well, and even now close things at times are blurry, but not double.
So my question is, why am i seeing double when i am at the optometrist wearing those heavy black frames when they fill in teh script. I need to get a new pair coz my driving instructor thinks my driving is being affected by my vision even though i think its me being uncordinated. I dont want to get prisms put in my glasses.
Prism is usually prescribed when the prescription in one eye is markedly different than the other. The goal is to get both eyes working in conjunction with each other, essentially both looking at the same spot.
It does take time to get you used to Prism. The higher the amount of prism, the more difficult it is. About 20% of eyeglass wearers can never get used to prism, no matter how small the quantity.
The black trial frame is adjustable and the double vision was either them not centering the centers to your eyes, or they were trying out the prism in them to see how you would react (whether it improves your vision or not).
Go back to the clinic. Having the exam done another time will give them needed practice and might give you the opportunity to see if another exam yields a prescription that you can either see better with or is more tolerable to you.
The single best thing you can do during an exam is give the examiner feed-back. “Wow, I see double!” or “that is slightly better” go a long way in telling them if they are on the right track or not.
