Why is Evolution such a big deal in the Religion vs. Atheist debate?
Seriously, I’d have to agree with Darwin when he says that his theory shouldn’t offend anyone. There is nothing about evolution that is anti-biblical. Don’t say it’s because of the 24 hour, 7 day creation about animals being created in their own likeliness; it’s definitely a story representing creation of the universe (as God is known to be a fan of stories and parables). So what’s the big deal?
It’s not. It’s only a “big deal” to a tiny minority of christians, the so-called “young earth creationists.” It’s of no concern whatsoever to atheists, scientists, the vast majority of christians, and the rest of the world.
“YEC” type people take a 100% literal view of the bible, which means they claim their god created humans fully-formed as we are now a few thousand years ago. While evolution says nothing whatsoever, pro or con, about claimed gods, it *does* show with ample evidence that humans were NOT created fully-formed a few thousand years ago. That’s why YECs irrationally and dishonestly deny all the evidence concerning evolution. If they accept the facts and evidence, their claim of 100% bible literacy is unsupportable, and they don’t want that to be the case.
