Why is my dog spontaneously limping?
We’ve had quite a bit of snow so far this winter, and my dog loves the snow! We play in it almost every day. He’ll be running, or just standing there, and out of nowhere he’ll lift one of his legs into a limp position and just start limping. The first couple of times he yelped and laid down in the snow, but now I think he’s used to it. The limping will last for only about 30 seconds to a minute, and then he’ll continue on his merry way as if nothing happened. Mostly it’s his hind legs, but I have seen it happen a couple of times in his front legs. I was thinking it was likely his muscles cramping from being in the snow too long, but I’d like to ask you Yahoo’ers for your wisdom on this as well. It didn’t start until the snow was on the ground. I have to ask my vet next time I see her, that part I already planned on.
My dog is a 60 lb German Shepard / Beagle Mix, and he’s about 3 years old.
My best guess is that he is getting snow caught in between the pads on his paws. It gives the same feeling as when you get snow INside your mittens or gloves. It’s a sudden sharp cold feeling and probably does hurt a little. When he does it, try to get close enough to check his pads. If there is snow there, clean it out for him.
