If I unlock a phone to use on a different carrier can i text on it and go online?

I have a contract with t-mobile and my t-mobile phone is broken so my friend gave me a nice at&t phone and told me to get it unlocked. If i do this will i be able to text on this unlocked phone and use the internet with my original t-mobile plan?

Yes you will be able to text without any problems but for the internet you will have to call tmobile to send you their internet settings
