were the Nazis hoping to secure Stalingrad in order to have full use of the Volga river to move fuel down?

is this what was the big reason for fighting for Stalingrad ? to make sure that they could not only secure the Caucus regions of oil…but be able to transport refined fuel or oil down this river? WHY THIS WAS SO IMPORTANT AT THE TIME? DID THEY HAVE SHORTAGE OF OIL?

The Germans intended to stop advancing once they had captured the west bank of the volga, they did not intend to use it as a transportation method but use it as their front lines, they intended to fortify the west bank and leave the russians stuck on the eastern bank unable to get across, since the Volga is a huge river over 5 KM wide at some points they thought it was an excellent defensive position.

the actual tactics used within the city were nothing to do with Hitler, instead Von Paulus decided to attack ‘head on’ rather than attack both flanks and gain control of the river bank, (thus isolating the defenders in a pocket in the city centre) instead he sent his men head on to clear the city block by block, while the Russians were able to continue to keep the defenders supplies via the river landing

Uboats could not get to the mouth of the volga because it was too far away from their nearest bases, to get there they would have to cross the Mediterranean sea, (past the allied navies) then into the black sea (past the russian navy) then up a river full of russian ships with watchers on both banks) (most russian supplies were delivered across the river at night when the Germans could not see them)

The defenders of Stalingrad for much of the battle was the 10th NKVD Rifle Division, this was an elite division made up of the most fanatical Communists, (the NKVD was the secret police) they were able to survive on little food and little ammo, like rats they lived on what they could find to eat, even eating their own leather belts! they were fighting in the middle of a city, in peoples homes they raided peoples cupboards for food, stole food off dead germans, etc, etc

The Germans had already firebombed Stalingrad back in the summer, all the wooden buildings had benn destroyed all that was left was the city centre which was made up of concrete building/factories which wouldn’t burn. plus once german troops were in the city it was too dangerous to bomb for fear of hitting your own men.
Hitler forbade the use of poison gas during the war, for fear of the allies using it on the germans in return. (also as a soldier in WW1 he himself was gassed so he hated the stuff)
